The textbooks I have used for my various science classes are excellent, SECULAR (Non-Christian) resources providing some of the finest overviews of "operational/observational" biological science available today. However, being SECULAR (Non-Christian) textbooks, their presentation of "historical/origins" science presents an atheistic, macroevolutionary worldview. This is actually good, since it allows our students the opportunity to exercise logikos, critical thinking while evaluating the evidence for a macroevolutionary vs. a creation worldview of life origins. To facilitate this critical thinking, we integrate research from world renowned scientists that are also courageously biblical, Christian/Creationists standing against censorship and peer-pressure persecution to speak the truth about our Creator and His Good Shepherd character.  They include:

So, relax and don't worry, because we will start slowly and give you plenty of time the first week to get things together and your mind settled :-)
* Also, since many students do not have iPads yet, we will be using mostly paper copies of documents the first couple of weeks.

2. It's ALSO wise to Download notes and guides to your iPad and your home PC.
- You can also print them into paper copies at HOME if that helps.

STUDENTS, the two main languages of science are LOGIC & MATH.
Science is the study of the physical world, using logic and mathematics.
The LAWS of logic, math, and science are not something we created.
They were built into the universe and we merely discovered them.
They are non-physical realities that exist independent of the physical world.
These non-physical LAWS came from a non-physical LAW-MAKER, GOD.
They are non-physical information from the intelligence of God that guide the formation and function of all physical interactions of both living and non-living things in CREATION.
Remember that the Bible calls JESUS, the LOGOS, who created all things. The term LOGOS means logical information, INFO. It is often translated as WORD. God's Word spoke into existence all things, and is guiding all things to the end of history (His-story).
Since He is the LAW-MAKER, the JUDGE, the END of history will be JUDGMENT. GOOD NEWS, CHRIST our Logos Creator is a perfectly GOOD SHEPHERD who loves you and did all that is necessary for the sins that separate you from Him to be forgiven and transformed into His image and character.
- He LIVED the perfect life of unselfish love that you cannot live.
- He DIED on the cross to pay the penalty for our sin which is separation from God the Father of Life.
- He ROSE from death to prove who He is, the I AM (YHWH) Creator, the author and designer of life eternal.
Only by accepting what He did for you and submitting to Him as your LORD, BOSS, can you be worthy to enter into His pure and perfect Kingdom to come, the New Heavens and New Earth. You cannot make yourself good ENOUGH, no matter how hard you try. Only Christ the Good Shepherd Creator can make you a NEW CREATION with His CHARACTER/IMAGE.

Students and parents,
It was very encouraging today to see that many of the students have already read Lesson 1 and 2 and have begun memorizing the vocab.  That skill and habit is excellent and essential.

Once again we will lose a teaching and discussion day during this unit on Ch. 2.  Next Friday Sept. 30 will be a no-class, fun day. So we must push quicker than usual to complete the Ch. 2 necessary content.

As I shared with you in class, the QUIZ will be similar to the last test on Ch 1.  It will have a matching section of vocab from lessons 1 and 2.

Then there will be some multiple choice and short answer questions requiring you to apply the concepts.  Use the blank Ch. 2 NOTEBOOK worksheets for Lessons 1 and 2 in your ITS LEARNING unit folder to help you see how to connect the concepts and apply them.  Remember, parts in processes for a purpose.  That is, forms for a function.  Lessons 1 and 2 focus on parts or forms, then lessons 3 and 4 focus on processes or purposes for function.

I have added to ITS LEARNING an ANSWER version to the lessons NOTEBOOK pdfs to help you ensure understanding.

These NOTEBOOK worksheets show you how to make organized outlines of chapter information for better understanding and study.  As the year unfolds, if you listen and practice, I will train you how to make similar organized outlines on your own from scratch.  You NEED this SKILL for future courses in every subject.

PARENTS,

Thank you for your investment of time and prayer to help your child master the study skills needed for this and future courses and even their vocation.  As our Life Science students finish up their preparation for the test at the end of this week, please remember that prep should have begun the day we started the unit.  That was two weeks ago. 

Some students still expect a teacher to list for them the limited information from a chapter that will be on a test.  That would defeat the whole purpose of mastering study skills for later life.

Most students must practice and master the skill of spending many days before an assessment reading, outlining, memorizing, repeating, reviewing, etc.  If they do not learn and master this skill, they will not succeed in future courses.  I know this is difficult for them, because it will take them time and they will never be as good at it as some other students.  Yet they must master these skills to the best of their ability, using tips, techniques, etc., and not just look for accommodations that let them avoid this hard boring process.

Their future courses, college, and jobs will not provide accommodations.  Those professors and bosses will fail or fire someone who does not know how to study and learn required information in this basic way.

PARENTS - about the subject of MACRO-evolution,

This topic is NOT a minor issue. It is foundational not only to much of science, but even more to big moral questions of life, character, culture, and CHRIST. Currently, the majority of people in positions of power and profit in both academia and media promote the theoretical hypotheses that macroevolutionary beliefs are based upon. However, many internationally respected scientists from every field are now challenging the theory because of new objective evidence that shows it to be neither logically nor scientifically true. So in this unit and throughout the year, we will be investigating both sides of the subject, the scientists, and the newest, best evidences for the primary questions involved. I will provide numerous supplemental materials for YOU, as you fulfill your responsibility to become informed and help your child learn to think biblically, logically, and critically about this and all other issues of life. Most of these supplemental materials will be OPTIONAL and not required. But a few will be required reading for the students and I will make it clear which ones those will be.

SPIRITUAL ANALOGY & APPLICATION- Elodea's common name is "Anacharis" which come from the Greek language and means:
"increased GRACE or GIFT (CHARIS)".
- Our Creator God designed (gave us as a gift) plants for many reasons:
* to eat and enjoy as His natural candy (fruit),
* to make clothing,
* to make homes out of wood,
** and especially to continually provide life-giving OXYGEN to his nephesh (thinking/feeling) creatures.
- Similarly, God has given us His Holy Spirit (the Greek word for spirit is pneuma, which also means air or wind or breath).
* His Holy SPIRIT is the life-giving source for new birth spiritually when a person is "born-again".
* So, without the new, SPIRITUAL, second BIRTH, no person can have eternal life (John 3)
- The choice is yours to trust and submit to (or to reject) the pure work that God did for you through Jesus.
* Jesus lived a sinless human life to earn your human right to go to heaven (the new creation).
* Jesus died (allowed sinful men to kill him) to pay the consequences we deserve for our sin.
* Jesus then rose from death as He promised to prove who He truly is and to offer His Spirit to us.
**** None of our SELF-infected "good" works are of any value to earn or buy His pure eternal life.

As I shared in class last week and today the test on chapters 11 and 12 this week will be very reduced.  You will not be responsible for all of the details in those two chapters.  We will be covering some of it later when we study both animal behavior and ecology.  I had hoped to get you a study guide yesterday but I was asked to speak at the FBC 7th to 12 grade youth night on apologetics yesterday and the next two Sunday nights.  So I needed to complete my final preparations for Sundays presentation.  By the way you and any other junior or high school students are welcome next Sunday night and the next.  I normally attend Northshore Bible Church and am grateful for the opportunity to spread our Good Shepherd's truths.

Now for the reduced study tips for this reduced test. 

Be sure that you know the following terms for Ch 11.

For Chapter 12
neuron is a nerve cell which is the basic functioning unit of the nervous system
nerve net a web of nerves for controlling body function and movement
closed circulatory system transports materials through blood using vessels like veins and arteries
open circulatory system transports blood and other fluids into open spaces organs
spiracles are many tiny holes in bodies of some animals for breathing instead of nostrils
crop is a specialized structure in the digestive system where ingested material is STORED
gizzard is a muscular pouch similar to a stomach that is used to GRIND food
Endo vs. Exo skeletons

ALSO know the following major concepts and diagrams in Chapter 11
On p. 379 there is a diagram of an evolutionary tree showing the belief that many very different kinds of creatures are related to one another by common ancestors.
Remember our past teaching on the creation scientists diagrams of an ORCHARD of separate trees representing different KINDS of creatures not related at all.
Like a Canine Kind Tree and a separate Feline Kind Tree.  Be able to explain why the creation model not only best fits the biblical view of animal origins but EVEN the new scientific evidence.

GILLS VS. LUNGS
HEART CHAMBERS AND SYSTEMS DIAGRAMS p. 425 be able to label by number of chambers and example of animal for each.
I will explain in class why they are evidence of an intelligent common DESIGNER not a common ancestor.
The more complex FORMS of hearts and system are for more complex FUNCTION needs in different environments.
A smart engineer like God would and did create different systems to function best in different environs.
This is the same as homologous structures like the same number of lower limb bones in the arms of rats dogs people and in wings of bats and birds and in flippers of whales and dolphins.  The BEST number of bones to TWIST the WRIST is TWO, not one or three or more.  Remember I demonstrated that in class with pencils.

We will cover digestion and nutrition later when we look at that subject in a separate unit on physiology and anatomy.

UNIT 13 The LIFE SCIENCE of HUMANS (from Eden to the Fall to the Flood to now to the New Creation)

Reduced summary of human biology focusing on HEALTH.

You are DESIGNED to be God's Temple for the Holy Spirit.
God honoring nutrition, diet, and exercise designed for the Garden of EDEN, then after the separation due to sin and before the flood, then after the flood and now, then during the MILLENNIAL KINGDOM. Finally during the NEW EARTH.

We won't be using much of the textbook for this subject.

EVIDENCE we are examining shows how SCIENCE supports a SCRIPTURAL diet. It fits the way we were designed by God according to Genesis 1:26-31; 9:3; Isaiah 11; etc.

* THINK & DO NOT go to extremes. The Bible does NOT say we should now be vegetarians or vegans. But science and Scripture both show that EVEN NOW a mostly PLANT based healthy diet is best. A diet based heavily on ANIMAL parts diets is like adding a lot of water to your car's gasoline. Cars are made to "eat" gasoline. It's cheaper and will work to add some water but it will eventually damage the engine parts.

* BEWARE that some resources on the internet and TV exaggerate and fabricate information to sell you stuff and get your money. Even some Christians have mistakenly gotten unintentionally caught up in inaccurate programs offering products, diets, and supplements that cannot do what they claim. YOU MUST CHECK THE EVIDENCE CAREFULLY.

SIN caused separation from God and the process of devolution, violent competition, suffering and death. AFTER separation from God's full protection, all things began to degenerate. Plants began to adapt and change with thorns/thistles (Gen 3) and some with concentrated poisons, and others with less nutrition.

The FLOOD killed all living plants, so it took months for new ones to grow and produce grains, fruit, nuts, etc. Many plant KINDS were destroyed and are now EXTINCT.  So, it is much harder now to live on a vegetarian or vegan diet. Only AFTER the flood destroyed plants globally did God give permission for humans to compassionately euthanize and consume animal meat for survival. (Genesis 9:1-3) It was never intended as the primary source of our protein, calcium, fat, etc.

SCIENCE shows that eating a lot of ANIMAL parts is LESS than the best diet. This MATCHES God’s DESIGN for our bodies.
Evidence demonstrates that a high meat/dairy diet can cause or make worse many types of cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, etc.  We and nephesh animals were designed for a non-violent, non-suffering, non-death diet of fruit and vegetables.

The Bible does NOT say that everyone TODAY should be a vegan or even a vegetarian.
The world today is no longer like the original Garden of EDEN. All nephesh creatures were peaceful vegetarians (Gen.1:29-31)
In Eden, many plants existed with much better nutrition than the ones we have today.
Plus, the special TREE OF LIFE was available.  It would have provided perfect nutrition and health.
* It will be BACK again in the NEW CREATION (New Heavens and New Earth).

Throughout history, His-story, THREE major things have eliminated many plant types:
1. FALL – sin caused separation from God and disorder, dysfunction (mutations), disease, death, and extinction
2. FLOOD – many plant types were permanently destroyed.  The ice age that followed destroyed many others
* God gave permission to humanely kill and eat animal flesh ONLY AFTER the flood.
3. FOOLISHNESS – human pride and greed have eliminated thousands of types just over the past few 100 years

DO NOT judge others for their different body type.  There are 3 main genetic body types based on shape (morph):
1. ECTOMORPH – genetically adapted to be thin (ancestors lived in hot environments near the equator)
2. MESOMORPH - genetically adapted to be more muscular (ancestors survived through harsh physical labor) 
3. ENDOMORPH - genetically adapted to add more fat (like Eskimos in the frozen Arctic)

Also realize that some people have unique genetic disorders that cause extreme thinness, or diseases needing necessary medications (like Lupus needing anti-inflammatory steroids) that cause weight gain and water retention. 
* The GOOD NEWS is that apart from special disorders or diseases, any typical person can BUILD a healthy body.

“FOOD” types can be divided different ways into categories. 

FOR EXAMPLE:

Plant-based
vs. Animal-based 

Wholefood  
vs. Processed  

Organic        
vs. Non-Organic
