NOTE that all NCZoo/ARK ANIMALS are rescues that have been healed and rehabilitated but cannot be released. We we provide the best life physically and emotionally they can have.
MAN'S ANIMAL ABUSE:
(see also Creature Compassion)
Wild Rory - rescued - paralyzed by a gun shot and left to die
He had been stranded in a field for days & was dying of thirst.
* He changed from vicious to tame in minutes after getting a bottle.
Then he let me feed by hand & rub his head.
The objective of this page is NOT to push an extreme animal rights agenda. It's simply to inform about the reality of animal suffering and to motivate individual and corporate response - especially among Christians. For a better understanding of how to respond, please see the related page: CHRIST'S CREATURE COMPASSION.
Having spent the last 40 years working with, caring for, and training exotic and domestic animals (see BACKGROUND), I've seen too many examples of abuse ranging from unintentional insensitivity to unimaginable cruelty. Also, the various responses of people to animal suffering range from lunatic humaniacs who place animals above humans, to those who ridicule anyone who speaks out on behalf of animals.
As times allows, I'll add personal stories of animals who suffered various degrees of physical or emotional abuse. These were "friends" I had the privilege to care for at the Audubon Zoo (elephants-lions-tigers-bears-leopards-wolves, etc.), treated at veterinary hospitals in New Orleans where I worked as the night time emergency on-call person, and the countless little souls (oligopsychos) my family rescued and rehabilitated for the Department of Wildlife (raccoons-squirrels-opossums-hawks-owls-etc.) during the 10 years I taught honors high school biology. Plus I'll include the latest research from scholars in ethology (the study of animal behavior, intelligence, and emotion). Profound discoveries have been made in recent years showing that many animals have amazing intellectual and emotional capabilities far beyond anything we ever imagined.
CREATOR OR CHEMICALS?
Such discoveries should humble our human arrogance, and hopefully lead to greater appreciation for the awe inspiring care our mutual Creator invested in the design of all creatures - great and small. In that light, my hope and prayer is that more scientists from a Christian worldview will research and write on this significant Christ-honoring subject.
Hypotheses of macroevolution through mutations even over millions of years cannot explain the origin of the massively encoded, genetic and neurological information that under girds the beautifully complex lives of sentient (nephesh) animal bodies and souls. Macroevolutionists challenge creationists for believing in an unseen, immaterial God. Yet a growing number of macroevolutionists now admit that mutations cannot generate the massive amount of coded biological information (genetic and epigenetic) in all creatures. Ironically, they reject God and choose to "believe" in an unseen, material, magical mystery mechanism that somehow manufactured all the bio-info in living systems. This violates the thermodynamic law of entropy and the biologic law of biogenesis. Please remember scientific observation verifies that coded information always comes from an intelligence, never from natural non-living chemicals. Therefore, it is a more logical and scientific conclusion to believe that bio-info came from a super-natural Intelligent Programmer.

Why has it been the evolutionary scientists of recent years, many of whom I greatly respect like Marc Bekoff below, who have done the best research, writing, and speaking out in defense of sentient, suffering animals?
"CURRENT INTERDISCIPLINARY RESEARCH
PROVIDES COMPELLING EVIDENCE
THAT MANY ANIMALS
EXPERIENCE SUCH EMOTIONS AS
JOY, FEAR, LOVE, DESPAIR, AND GRIEF
— WE ARE NOT ALONE"

Animal Emotions: Exploring Passionate Natures
Shamefully, it should have been followers of the Good Shepherd Creator leading at the forefront of this effort, in order to magnify His goodness and His honor. The good news is that historically there were courageous Christian scholars who spoke, wrote, and acted in response to the full good news of our Good Shepherd Creator, Christ. Men like John Wesley, John Newton, William Wilberforce, and many others stood against the prevailing insensitivity and abuse of animals in their day. In fact Wilberforce was instrumental not only in the abolition of slavery, but in the founding of the RSPCA (Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals).
MORE PERSONAL STORIES OF MY ANIMAL 'FRIENDS", PLUS SCHOLARLY RESEARCH DISCOVERIES WILL BE ADDED SOON . . . AS TIME AND GOD'S GRACE ALLOW :-)

Hawks - victims of gun shots
Did you know that, historically, all cultures in which insensitive cruelty toward animals has been tolerated are cultures that also tolerated or encouraged abusive oppression of vulnerable groups of humans.

Unnecessary Suffering Caused by Predatory People

The book has received rave reviews from the likes of the New York Times and mixed reaction from conservatives. It's a fascinating — and disturbing — read, whether you come out agreeing with it or not."
Man is much closer to an animal than to a god
(God is infinitely greater than man in every way)
"Concerning the condition of the sons of men, God tests them,
that they may see that they themselves are animals.
For what happens to the sons of men also happens to animals;
one thing befalls them: as one dies, so dies the other.
Surely, they all have one breath; man has no advantage over animals,
for all [is] vanity.
All go to one place: all are from the dust, and all return to dust.
Who knows whether the breath of man ascends upward
and the breath of the beast descends downward to the earth?" Ecclesiastes 3:18-21

"Are animals closer to humans on an emotional level than generally has been believed? The many scientists, researchers, wildlife photographers, and other animal experts interviewed in this Discovery Channel video answer with a resounding yes. They make their case in this 93-minute documentary, narrated by actress Sigourney Weaver, with stories of despondent dogs, grieving chimps, and lab rats who laugh when tickled. The first half focuses on happy bonds between mother and child, siblings, and animals and humans. The second half delves into the darker subjects of sadness and grief, offering astounding assertions such as elephants secrete a tear like substance when upset and search dogs finding only corpses in the Oklahoma City bombing case needed treatment for depression. While the focus is on mammals, mollusks get some air time in the form of octopuses that appear to change color according to their situation. Backing up observations with brain imaging and genetic testing, the scientists--and this film--make a compelling view for any animal lover. --Kimberly Heinrichs
